
The Truth About IP65 Heaters and Why They Actually Fail
You’ll see “IP65 rated” on almost every outdoor infrared heater these days. It sounds great on a spec sheet. But here’s the thing: a lot of these units fall apart the moment they actually get hot. The problem usually isn’t the metal box. It’s where the power cord enters the machine. When the heater kicks on, you’ve got a massive temperature difference between the glowing element inside and the freezing air outside. This creates a vacuum. It literally sucks moisture right through the cable entry point.
Why those cheap seals don’t hold up
Most budget heaters use basic rubber gaskets. They’re fine for a while, but constant heating and cooling kills them. The rubber gets hard, it cracks, and then the rain finds a way in. Once that happens, the insulation starts to carbonize. Then you get a short circuit. In a lot of those “consumer” models, the wire is basically just glued into a plastic hole. Glue melts. It peels. It’s not a real seal; it’s a prayer.
Doing it the right way
If you want something that actually survives the winter, you need a different approach. We use high-temp silicone potting and compression glands. These are designed to keep a tight grip even when the metal and plastic expand from the heat. We also use fluoropolymer or fiberglass braiding on the wires. It stops the insulation from scorching right where it hits the terminal. Then there’s the “drip-loop.” It’s a simple design, but it’s huge. It stops water from just sliding down the cable and straight into the electrical guts. Because if that seal isn’t airtight, the high-voltage current will find the grounded chassis the second some condensation forms.And that’s when things get dangerous.
The trade-off
Now, there is a catch. Making a unit this airtight basically turns it into a tank. The downside? It’s a pain to repair in the field. Since we pot the connections in silicone to keep the moisture out, you can’t just pop a hatch and swap a wire. If a lead fails, you’re usually replacing the whole sealed head. It’s a choice you have to make. You can have easy access for repairs, or you can have a heater that won’t blow a fuse the first time it rains. We’ll take the tank every time.
