
Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
When you’re running a Class 100 (ISO 5) environment, you’re basically fighting a war against dust. Every single tiny particle is the enemy. The problem is that most standard heaters are secret culprits—they off-gas or shed microscopic flakes the moment they start heating up and expanding. That’s why we stick with high-purity synthetic quartz infrared lamps.
Why quartz?
It comes down to the materials. We use a type of fused silica that’s so pure it won’t leak volatile organic compounds (VOCs), even when things get scorching hot. Think of the quartz tube as a tight, airtight seal for the tungsten filament inside. Unlike metal or ceramic heaters that can oxidize or flake off over time, this stuff just stays put. It doesn’t react. You get the heat you need on your wafer or substrate without any unwanted “surprises” landing on your work.
Power and the “Stress” Factor
You can tweak the voltage and wattage to get the exact heat you’re after. If you need to move fast and keep throughput high, go for the high-wattage tubes. They ramp up quickly. But here is the catch: more heat in a smaller space puts a lot of stress on the ends of the lamp. If you’re pushing for max wattage in a short tube, you’ve got to make sure your mounting brackets give the lamp room to breathe. Quartz expands as it heats. If the tube is pinched or held too tight,**it will crack.**Simple as that.
Getting it installed (and keeping it alive)
We usually go with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They keep the wiring tight and stop vibrations from shaking things loose. Most of the time, these just slide right into your existing industrial IR arrays without any fuss. A couple of warnings before you start: First, check your power supply. The lamp is clean, but if your power is “noisy,” it can mess with your sensitive cleanroom sensors. A good filter fixes this. Second—and this is the big one—treat these lamps like glass. Literally. One single fingerprint on the tube creates a hot spot. That hot spot becomes a weak point, and before you know it, the lamp burns out way too early. Always, always use lint-free gloves. No exceptions.
