
Getting Your Bathroom Heat Just Right
When you’re picking out a waterproof infrared heater, it’s tempting to just go for the biggest wattage on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really all about how much space you’re trying to warm up. If you go overboard, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill. Go too low? You’ll still feel that annoying chill the second you step out of the shower.
Picking the Right Power
I usually look at the size of the room first. For those tiny powder rooms—you know, the ones under 4m²—a 250W to 500W lamp does the trick. Since the space is so small, the warmth hits you almost instantly. Once you move into a medium-sized bathroom (around 4m² to 8m²), you’ll want to bump that up to 600W or 800W. Bathrooms are tricky because tiles and glass soak up heat and let it leak out. You need a bit more punch to keep the air feeling steady. Then you have the luxury wet rooms or those big, open-concept baths over 10m². In those cases, I recommend using a few 1000W units instead of one giant one. It spreads the heat around so you don’t end up with one “scorching” spot and three cold corners.
The Nitty-Gritty: Water and Placement
Since these live in a steamy environment, we use quartz glass tubes with IP-rated seals. This keeps the electronics safe from the fog. We use short-wave infrared, which is great because it warms you up directly, rather than trying to heat up all the air in the room. But watch your ceiling height. If you hang a powerful lamp too low, it’s going to feel like a heat lamp at a buffet—too much. Too high, and you won’t feel a thing. Aim for about 2.2 to 2.5 meters. That’s usually the sweet spot for most homes.
A Quick Warning on Your Wiring
More wattage means the room warms up faster. That’s the good part. The tricky part is your electrical panel. If you decide to wire up four 1000W lamps on one single circuit, you might find yourself staring at a tripped breaker right when you’re mid-shower. It’s a pain. Just double-check your wire gauge and breaker capacity before you start installing a big array of heaters. Better to be safe than cold.
